For those of you who have read/watched Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy I need not tell you how important this is. For those of you who haven't, you really should. But here is a quick clip, to sum up. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aboZct…

I’m not one for spoilers and I wanted to go into watching the movie as unbiased and fresh as possible Today I was able to see Airbender and here are my thoughts.

Just a quick word on plot, dialogue and editing.  In a movie, in a show, in a book, there is a wonderful phrase that states: Show! Don’t tell. One should strive to create a story through the use of showing development, attributes, etc rather than stating them outright. Unfortunately, I don’t think that anyone got around to telling that to M Night. What we got a poorly narrated “scenes and selections from a show called Avatar”. Narration is something that can work beautifully in a movie (or book) but this was taking things a bit too far. When Katara has to tell me that Sokka <3s Yue and she and Aang started waterbending and that they were worried about the Fire Nation attacking within a few weeks and whatever else she said, that is trying to compensate.

Okay, one more quick thing on big issues with the film.  While I understand, expect, and even agree with changing a story to make it best fit a movie format, one still has to maintain the integrity of the characters. I felt that was not done.

Okay, onto other things that bothered me.

The soundtrack was meh at best. I’m a huge music buff so this was a major point for me. I want the music to be almost a character in and of itself; have the ability to say through the music what the characters are unable to say. However, the soundtrack didn’t move me. I didn’t even know it was there. I think it would be interesting to listen to the music sans movie and see if there is a difference.

Iroh doesn’t drink tea. At all. This really irked me. Granted, he does mention having a cup of tea with Zuko, but we never see him drinking it.

No Zhao sideburns = no Zhao love.

Mostly what I felt that was wrong about this was the lack of human connection. Did I really care about any of them? No, not really. When something bad happens to a character, I want to feel sad with them. This time I was just bored.  The one moment that I did feel something was when Aang had his flashback to when he was learning to meditate.  When Gyatso corrected him without opening his eyes, I found that funny. Mostly because when I was first learning to meditate, I was the same way. So I enjoyed that.

Honestly, I feel like I’m still waiting for the movie to be released.  What I saw today didn’t feel like anything.
